In Viking culture, owning a sword was a sign of high status and honour. These valuable weapons were often ornately decorated (hence the red glass crystal in the handle of this pendant), and passed from one generation of warrior to the next. However, the swords of famed fighters who died in battle would often be destroyed before being buried alongside their owner. The "killing" of swords would prevent bold graverobbers from digging up burial sites to get their grubby hands on a legendary blade.
