In nautical-speak, a loose cannon is any reckless individual whose behaviour endangers the crew of your ship. The name comes from the fact that if a several-thousand-pound cannon is not properly secured, it will instantly crush anything and anyone in its path, possibly even smashing a hole in the hull and sending you to a watery grave.
