Six Feet Under

There are countless myths, folklores and cautionary tales when it comes to death. For example, you’ve likely heard the proverb that bodies must be buried six feet underground. Aside from the desire to thwart gravediggers and mask the smell of decomposition, burying a casket under six feet of soil was based on the superstition that a grave should be at least as deep as the deceased is long, thereby ensuring the dead could not rise and escape their burial plot. Since the average male in the 17th and 18th centuries stood around 5’6” tall, six feet was deemed a satisfactory depth.
