Without compasses or any modern technology, early seafarers had to get creative with their navigation techniques. In order to ensure they were heading towards land, some would rely on the good sense of a raven. If a raven was released from its cage and circled above the boat, there was no land in sight. But, if the raven was released and flew away from the boat, the explorer would correct course, following the raven's flight path towards solid ground.
